Louise Bourgeois spent her life navigating the delicate threads between mother and child, memory and self, tenderness and fear. Walking into Rocking to Infinity at Kukje Gallery felt like entering the slow heartbeat of that journey.
Fabric sculptures, soft forms, and intimate drawings opened like diary entries—stitched, folded, torn, repaired. The gentle rhythm of rocking echoed through the exhibition: comforting yet uneasy, like the pulse of someone trying to soothe what cannot be named.
For Bourgeois, motherhood was never merely a role—it was a mirror. A reflection of identity, repetition, rupture, and return. In works such as The Couple and her fragile coffee-filter drawings, love stretched between tension and vulnerability.
Each piece seems to ask:
Can love be repaired?
Bourgeois never answers with certainty. Instead, she sews, sculpts, and circles back—again and again—toward herself.
Even decades later, her works remind us that healing is not linear. It is stitched slowly, through hands that remember both comfort and ache.

루이스 부르주아는 평생 ‘모성과 자아’, ‘기억과 예술’ 사이의 실타래를 더듬어왔다. 국제갤러리에서 열린 《Rocking to Infinity》는 이러한 여정의 한가운데로 걸어 들어가는 경험이었다.
천, 조각, 드로잉들이 한 페이지씩 펼쳐지는 일기처럼 이어지고, 바느질된 표면과 접힌 자리마다 시간의 흔적이 스며 있다. 흔들리는 리듬은 위로이자 불안의 파동처럼 공간 전체를 감싸며, 모성과 사랑, 생존의 감정을 동시에 불러왔다.
부르주아에게 모성은 역할이 아닌 하나의 거울이었다.
정체성의 균열, 반복, 귀환의 서사가 그 안에 담겨 있다.
The Couple부터 커피 필터 드로잉까지—모든 작품은 다정함과 긴장감 사이에서 떨리고 있었다.
“사랑은 다시 꿰맬 수 있을까?”
그녀는 명확한 답을 주지 않는다. 대신 바느질하고, 조각하며, 반복해서 자신에게로 돌아갈 뿐이다.
지금도 그녀의 작업은 말해준다.
치유는 직선이 아니라고.
손끝으로 천천히 이어 붙여가는 과정이라고.
